Game of Thrones x Oculus Rift
A first-to-market Game of Thrones VR experience sweeps San Diego Comic-Con.
For Game of Thrones, HBO invited fans to do the impossible — ascend the show's 700-foot ice wall and stand at its edge. Working with Relevent and Framestore, we created a groundbreaking virtual reality experience that placed audiences inside Westeros through a first-to-market fusion of storytelling, technology, and sensory immersion.
Built in real time using the Unity engine and Oculus Rift headsets, the experience combined wind machines, rumble packs, and photoreal VFX to fully transport fans into the world of the Night's Watch. Participants began in the rickety elevator at Castle Black and ascended skyward to the icy summit of the Wall — where the view of the North awaited...along with a chilling surprise.
The installation became one of Comic-Con's most talked-about attractions, lauded by USA Today, Ad Age, and CNN for redefining how audiences engage with a story.
It was pretty damn cool, tbh.
"Oculus Rift makes ascending the Wall so engrossing, and the sensation of being 700 feet above the ground so realistic, that every reaction in my body and my brain told me I was in real danger."— Laura Hudson, Wired
