Netflix Comedy — Brand Identity
Whether it's a Chris Rock stand-up special (the first-ever live event on Netflix), an edgy animated series for adults like Big Mouth, or a screwball Drew Barrymore zombie comedy like Santa Clarita Diet, the comedy spectrum is broad and deeply personal.
So, it was clear that Netflix's official comedy brand, Netflix is a Joke, needed a design system that could unify every genre of comedy, from stand-up and sketch to sitcoms and prestige series. The identity had to feel bold and playful, while still clearly belonging to Netflix. But most importantly, it had to stay out of the way.
The intentional choice of an entirely black and white color palette allows the brand to establish presence, but strategically leaves space for the content itself to add the color—allowing every series, special, or social format to find its spotlight.
A custom cut of Netflix Sans subtly echoes the curves of the main Netflix wordmark. Scalable patterns, versatile iconography, and playful motion expression add depth and flexibility. And the brand's signature tone of voice—dry, self-aware, and slightly sardonic—comes to life in copy, never missing a chance to poke fun at itself or its global media juggernaut daddy company. Lol.
